Get ready for your vacation with these plumbing tips.
Summer has arrived! The kids are out of school, and it is time for your summer vacation. However, as you get ready to leave, don’t forget about your pipes. When you leave on vacation, no one is home to tend to plumbing emergencies. Reduce your risk for a disaster while you’re away and check out these summer vacation plumbing tips.
Turn Off the Ice Maker.
When no one’s home, there’s no reason to keep the ice maker going. All it does is use water unnecessarily. Turn it off before you leave so that you can save a bit on your water consumption.
Disable the Water Softening System.
When no one is home to shower, there’s no need to enable the water softening system. Shut off the system to conserve water, energy, and water softening salt.
Check for Leaks.
Before you hit the road, sweep through your home to check for any leaks. From faucets to appliances, check for any drips, puddles, or signs of water damage. If you do stumble upon a leak, have it fixed right away. That way you’re better able to take control of the situation before it gets out of hand, especially when you’re away.
Lower the Water Heater.
If you don’t lower the heater, you may be heating an empty appliance. Not only does it waste energy consumption, but it can damage your water heater. When you head out of town, lower the temperature on your water heater so that you’re better able to avoid problems while you’re away.
Shut Off the Water.
You have the option to shut off the water altogether. Turning off the water main while you’re away can prevent any serious water damage issues while you’re out of town. That way you can enjoy your vacation and rest easy knowing that you aren’t going to come home to flooded living room. However, do keep in mind that if you do turn off the water main, it may affect your ability to water your landscaping.
