Protect Your Home, Conserve Water, & Save Money with These Tips to Help Your Find Leaks in Your Home

June 7, 2023 by hls_admin

Check out these tips to help you find leaks in your home.

It’s no secret that plumbing leaks are bad. If left unattended to they be serious trouble. Not only do they hinder water conservation efforts, but leaks can also cause your water bill to skyrocket. The EPA reports that the average American household wastes 10,000 gallons of water annually.  Take control of your plumbing and be wary of leaks. Learn how to track down leaks in your home to help save water and save money.

Check the Meter.

Your water meter can help you determine if you have a leak. Take a look at your meter for a two-hour period and don’t use any water. That way you can see if your home has a leak. If the meter reading is different than it was when you first checked, then you likely have a leak. You can also use your water bills as your guide. If you have a sudden spike in your water bill, you probably have a leak.

Food Coloring Test.

It can be hard to determine whether or not you have a leak in your toilet. Test it by putting a drop of food coloring in the tank. Wait about ten minutes. If you see any of the coloring in the toilet bowl, then there’s a leak. Just remember to flush, so you don’t stain your toilet bowl.

Look for Hidden Leaks.

If you think you have a leak, try looking in less common places to find it. Look under the sink, behind appliances, and near the toilet. That way you have a better chance at finding and repairing a leak.

When it comes to your pipes, make sure that they’re leak-free. You’ll help to conserve water while lowering your water bill.
